Danny Padgett

Danny Padgett

Leader, Judge, Breeder, and Ambassador for the Fancy

Few individuals have served the exhibition poultry community in as many capacities as Danny Padgett. As a breeder, exhibitor, nationally respected judge, show organizer, mentor, and longtime leader of the American Poultry Association, Danny has devoted much of his life to strengthening the organizations and people that sustain the fancy.

Danny earned his APA and ABA judging licenses at a young age and went on to become a respected judge throughout North America. His assignments have included many of the country’s premier events, among them the Pacific Poultry Breeders show, The Ohio National, and the Poultry Congress. In the show hall, Danny is known not simply for making selections, but for explaining them. His willingness to discuss breed characteristics and judging decisions has made the judging aisle another place where he can educate and encourage exhibitors.

His service extends well beyond judging. Danny served for many years as APA District 12 Director and later served four years as President of the American Poultry Association. In Florida, he has devoted decades to the Sunshine Classic in Lake City, including more than 35 years as a lead organizer. His work has helped the event grow into one of the Southeast’s major poultry exhibitions.

An accomplished breeder, Danny is especially well known for his Muscovy Ducks, although his experience encompasses an unusually broad range of breeds, including Cornish, Plymouth Rocks, Modern Games, Malays, Cubalayas, and White Faced Black Spanish. He freely shares his knowledge of breeding and genetics and has helped numerous exhibitors improve their stock.

Danny has also been a steadfast advocate for young people and newcomers. He has judged youth shows throughout the country, answered countless questions, and even provided quality stock to help aspiring exhibitors get started.

Through leadership, judging, breeding, show management, and mentorship, Danny Padgett has consistently put the future of the fancy ahead of personal recognition. His decades of quiet service have strengthened its institutions, educated its exhibitors, and helped ensure that purebred poultry continues to thrive for generations to come.

Dennis Myers

Master Breeder, Mentor, and Student of the Rhode Island Red

Dennis Myers has built his reputation in the exhibition poultry fancy through a combination of careful observation, disciplined selection, exceptional conditioning, and a deep appreciation for the Rhode Island Red. A Master Breeder of both Large Fowl and Bantam Rhode Island Reds, Dennis has dedicated decades to understanding, breeding, and improving one of America’s most iconic breeds.

Dennis first distinguished himself with Rhode Island Red Large Fowl, becoming a Master Breeder before selling his flock in 2006 because of work commitments. Following his retirement in 2013, he returned to serious breeding—this time with Rhode Island Red bantams. Applying the same disciplined approach, he developed an outstanding bantam line and earned Master Breeder recognition once again.

At the center of Dennis’s breeding philosophy is breed type. He uses the APA and ABA Standards as visual guides when evaluating his birds, retaining only those he believes can improve the next generation. Once type is established, feather quality and conditioning become critical. Dennis credits Large Fowl mentors Wilbur Stauffer and Robert Cook with teaching him the importance of daily care and conditioning in producing a champion. H.H. Andrew and George Schreffler were similarly influential in inspiring the bantam line Dennis ultimately developed from their stock.

Dennis’s contribution extends well beyond his own breeding pens. For many years, he has helped support The Ohio National and has willingly shared his knowledge with other exhibitors. He has introduced and assisted numerous people interested in breeding and showing Rhode Island Red bantams and has been particularly generous in helping youth obtain birds and become involved in the fancy.

Friendly, approachable, and rarely without a smile, Dennis represents the best tradition of the master breeder: striving continually to improve his own birds while freely helping others improve theirs. His Rhode Island Reds demonstrate his skill as a breeder; the people he has encouraged demonstrate his lasting contribution to the hobby.

Karen Unrath

Karen Unrath

Dedicated Steward of the American Bantam Association

For more than twenty‑five years, Karen Unrath has been one of the most steady, reliable forces behind the American Bantam Association. Many members know her name, but few truly see the depth of her work — the countless hours, the quiet problem‑solving, and the genuine care she brings to the ABA every single day.

Karen’s connection to the fancy runs deep. She grew up in it, learning the ropes from her mother,  Eleanor Vinhage, who taught her not just how to love bantams, but how to support the people who love them.  Not only was she mentored by her mom, but also her father, August Vinhage served the ABA and APA as a licensed judge and headed the ABA Standard committee for many years.

Karen spent fourteen years helping her mother with ABA responsibilities before stepping into the Secretary role herself in 2000. Since then, she has become the longest‑serving Secretary in ABA history, and the person so many of us turn to when they need clarity, history, or simply someone who understands how the Association works.

Over the years, Karen has helped guide the ABA through major changes, playing a key role in moving the ABA from old‑style, manual recordkeeping to a technology‑based environment. She works alongside many volunteers to  make the ABA stronger, more efficient, and better prepared for the future.

Karen brings a creative, entrepreneurial spirit to the Association. She helped spearhead the fancy’s first and only “currency,” the Bantam Buck — a fun idea that turned into a successful collectible that members still use today. She expanded ABA merchandise with annual pins and new apparel options that help members feel connected to the organization while supporting its mission.

But if you ask most people what stands out about Karen, they’ll mention her customer service. If you ask Karen about customer service and why has she served the ABA membership for so long…her answer is simple.  It’s important.  To Karen, the poultry fancy is a gift we have been given, and it is up to us to keep it healthy and strong and to support the membership with service and care.

Her reliability has become one of the ABA’s greatest strengths. Even when the workload is heavy or deadlines are tight, Karen finds a way to keep everything moving with a smile (most times).

Despite all this behind‑the‑scenes work, Karen is also an accomplished breeder and exhibitor. Together with her husband, Kevin Unrath, she has bred and shown outstanding bantams across the country for more than 25 years. Their dedication earned Karen and Kevin recognition as a Master Breeder of Belgian Quail d’Anvers, a title that reflects both skill and long‑term commitment.

Karen has never asked for recognition. She simply continues to serve — steadily, quietly, and with genuine devotion to the ABA and its members. Her work has strengthened the Association, supported the fancy, and touched the lives of countless exhibitors.

Her legacy is one of consistency, creativity, and care — the kind of contribution that keeps an organization strong for generations.

Ralph Beamer

Judge, Breeder, and Pillar of the Canadian Fancy

For more than four decades, Ralph Beamer was a respected and influential presence in exhibition poultry throughout Canada and across North America. A longtime ABA and APA licensed judge, accomplished breeder, exhibitor, and mentor, Ralph became one of the pillars of the Canadian poultry community and helped carry forward a proud family tradition in the fancy.

As a judge, Ralph earned the respect of exhibitors throughout North America for his knowledge, experience, and fairness. He officiated at shows across the continent and was a familiar presence at many of the hobby’s most important events. His remarkable association with The Ohio National spanned more than 30 years as a judge, reflecting both the confidence placed in his abilities and his enduring commitment to the exhibition poultry community.

Ralph was equally accomplished on the other side of the judging aisle. As an active breeder and exhibitor in Canada, he competed at major events including the Canadian National Exhibition and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. He was also one of the backbones of the Beamer family’s longstanding involvement in breeding and exhibiting quality poultry.

Perhaps Ralph’s greatest influence, however, was felt through the people he helped along the way. He willingly shared his experience with fellow breeders, exhibitors, and aspiring judges, providing the guidance and encouragement that helped others develop their own skills and knowledge.

Through more than 40 years of judging, breeding, exhibiting, and mentoring, Ralph Beamer earned the admiration of poultry enthusiasts on both sides of the border. His influence continues through the breeders and judges he helped develop and through the Canadian poultry community to which he devoted so much of his life.

Danny Feathers

Danny Feathers

Breeder, Exhibitor, and Devoted Mentor

For Danny Feathers, exhibition poultry was far more than a pastime—it was a way of life. A second-generation poultry fancier from Oklahoma, Danny became an exceptional breeder and exhibitor whose devotion to his birds was matched by his willingness to help others succeed.

Danny was particularly respected for his White Plymouth Rocks and Leghorns. He bred outstanding Large Fowl and Bantam White Rocks, along with White and Buff Leghorns, developing birds that demonstrated his keen understanding of type, quality, and the characteristics that define an exceptional exhibition specimen. He was also an ABA licensed judge, bringing the knowledge developed through years of breeding and exhibiting into the show ring.

Yet those who knew Danny remember more than the quality of the birds he raised. He was a generous mentor who readily shared what he knew with fellow poultry enthusiasts. Whether someone was an experienced breeder looking to improve a line or a newcomer trying to understand the fundamentals of breeding and exhibition, Danny was willing to offer advice, encouragement, and assistance.

He understood that preserving the fancy required more than producing winning birds. It required developing the next generation of breeders. Danny encouraged newcomers to improve their skills, learn from their birds, and remain involved in the poultry community. In doing so, he helped countless people become better breeders and exhibitors.

Danny lived for his birds and gave generously to the hobby he loved. His passing left a profound void among those who knew him, but his influence remains visible in the poultry, breeders, and exhibitors he helped along the way. His legacy is one of exceptional breeding, generous mentorship, and complete devotion to the exhibition poultry fancy.

Charles Wabeck

Poultryman, Educator, Judge, and Mentor

For more than 60 years, Charles Wabeck devoted his knowledge and talents to poultry. A second-generation poultry fancier, Charles combined a distinguished career in the poultry industry with a lifelong commitment to breeding, exhibiting, judging, and mentoring within the exhibition poultry community.

Professionally, Charles served as a poultry specialist with the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension, where his expertise allowed him to contribute to poultry production well beyond the show hall. Among his professional accomplishments was his work in developing a broiler watering system, reflecting the practical knowledge and innovative thinking he brought to his career.

Within the exhibition fancy, Charles was especially known for his Plymouth Rocks. He raised outstanding Large Fowl and Bantam Rocks, and his influence on Rock bantams extended far beyond his own poultry yards. At a time when the breed was developing across the country, many Rock bantams could trace their origins or improvement to Charles’s stock. His skill as a breeder was complemented by his service as both an APA and ABA licensed judge.

Despite his many accomplishments, Charles freely shared his knowledge rather than keeping it to himself. He became a valued mentor to fellow exhibitors and took particular interest in helping junior poultry enthusiasts. He assisted many young people in acquiring birds, learning proper breeding and exhibition practices, and finding their place within the fancy.

Few individuals have bridged the professional poultry industry and exhibition fancy as completely as Charles Wabeck. Through six decades of breeding, judging, education, innovation, and mentorship, he helped improve both poultry and poultrymen. The birds he developed and, even more importantly, the people he encouraged remain an enduring part of his legacy.
